Rancho Cucamonga High School Weight Room
Location: Rancho Cucamonga, CA
In 2023, Chaffey Joint Union High School District completed the renovation of the weight room facilities at Rancho Cucamonga High School to enhance functionality, occupant comfort, and overall facility performance for student-athletes and staff. The existing building consisted of a single-story structure constructed with steel roof framing supported by masonry bearing walls.
The project scope involved a comprehensive structural evaluation and coordination of multiple building improvements within the existing facility. Renovations included the installation of upgraded rooftop mechanical units requiring structural analysis and support considerations for new roof loading conditions, as well as the addition of large ceiling fans to improve ventilation and indoor air circulation throughout the training space. The project also incorporated the creation of new openings within existing masonry walls to accommodate updated architectural and mechanical layouts, requiring careful structural detailing to maintain the integrity and performance of the existing lateral and gravity load-resisting systems.
Additional improvements included the construction of new interior partition walls and associated structural modifications necessary to support the reconfigured interior layout. Throughout the design process, special attention was given to maintaining compatibility with the existing structural systems while ensuring compliance with current building code requirements and DSA standards.
Designed and delivered in accordance with the rigorous requirements of the Division of the State Architect (DSA), the project demonstrates a strong commitment to structural safety, durability, and long-term performance within an active educational environment. Every aspect of the structural design — from the evaluation of the existing masonry systems to the coordination of the steel roof framing modifications — was approached with careful consideration for constructability, occupant safety, and the continued support of the school community for years to come.
